Parliament’s 1701 Act of Settlement states that only an Anglican may inherit the English throne.
for lack of better qualified Protestant heirs, the Act of Settlement passes over the legitimate but Roman Catholic representatives of the Stuart line in favor of the Protestant house of Hanover, descended from the daughter of James I.
The Act recognizes Sophia’s title to the English throne.
