Years: 970 - 970
The Fatimids had occupied Palestine after their conquest of Egypt, but Syria could not be overcome, following a defeat at Damascus at the hands of the Qarmatians, an extremist Isma'ili Muslim sect centered in eastern Arabia.
When the Qarmatians overrun Egypt, Jawhar is able to defeat them north of Cairo on December 22, 970, although the struggle will continue until 974.
To secure the southern border of Egypt, a legation is sent to the Nubian Christian kingdom of Makuria.
