Garibaldi's forces overcome the last organized army …
Years: 1860 - 1860
October
Garibaldi's forces overcome the last organized army of the Bourbons at the Battle of Volturnus, near Caserta, on October 1.
After this battle, the largest by Garibaldi's expedition, both sides seem exhausted.
In the immediate aftermath, the battle is a defeat for Garibaldi, but in the longer term, it proves to their advantage.
The cost for Garibaldi in men is higher: 506 killed and 1,389 taken prisoner, but the Neapolitan forces has lost 308 and 2,507 taken prisoner.
The Bourbon army is unable to use their victory to capture Caserta.
Both armies showed bravery, except perhaps for the Royal Guards and troops of Ruiz de Ballesteros, who are the largest cause of the defeat.
Garibaldi is forced to request troops from the Piedmontese.
Yet while Francesco II wishes to use the impasse for the Garibaldi forces to attack again, his generals recommend hat the troops be reorganized.
Thus he leaves Capua for Gaeta, and will be unable to retake his throne.
Soon Piedmontese reinforcements will arrive, defeating the Royal troops at Gaeta, and causing the King to flee.
