Hooker, in conflict with General-in-Chief Halleck, is rebuffed by Washington on June 28 in his request for additional troops to meet the enemy at Gettysburg, thirty-five miles (fifty-six kilometers) southwest of his Harrisburg headquarters.
Sensing his superiors' distrust, Hooker resigns his command on the eve of battle and is replaced by General George G. Meade.
