A nineteen-year-old Palestinian, frustrated by King 'Abdullah's hostility toward Palestinian nationalism, assassinates the Jordanian monarch on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem just before he enters the Mosque of 'Umar to pray on July 20, 1951.

Abdullah's sixteen-year-old grandson Hussein ibn-Talal (the future King Hussein) barely escapes injury (and is to continue 'Abdullah's policy of clandestine contact with Israel but, like his grandfather, will never feel politically strong enough to make a separate peace. The assassin and four others will be hanged for their part in the murder.)

Abdullah's son Talal succeeds him.
