Merchant Captain Warren Delano, Jr., an American, had sailed to Canton in 1833, where he had done so well that within seven years he had become a senior partner in Russell & Company at age thirty-one.
Delano becomes a member of the Canton Regatta Club in 1844 and initiates dealings with the Hong Society, laying the basis for his future wealth in opium trafficking as the head of Russell and Company.
