McClellan's forces fight those of Joseph E. Johnston at Seven Pines (Fair Oaks) along the Chickahominy River, only six miles (ten kilometers) from Richmond, from May 3 to June 1.
The opposing forces—1,797 Union to 41,816 Confederats—are virtually equal in strength, while losses to the Union are 12 (5,031), to the Confederates' 14 (6,134).
The battle ends in a draw, concluding the first phase of McClellan's Peninsular Campaign.
Johnston is seriously wounded in the first day of fighting, however, and field command of the Army of Northern Virginia passes to Robert E. Lee.
