Massive nonviolent protests begin in Dushanbe in March 1992.

After government forces use live rounds against the demonstrators in April, violence soon spreads to the southern city of Kulob and elsewhere.

In August, opposition forces oust Nabiyev from the presidency and briefly assume power, but by November, a government led by Imomali Rakhmonov and backed by Russian troops regains control.

A mass exodus to Afghanistan follows.
