Luther, his doctrines under attack by the pope and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is placed under an imperial ban after refusing to recant before Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in April 1521.

The Saxon ruler Frederick the Wise shelters him by taking him into custody and winning an exemption for Saxony from the Edict of Worms' outlawing of Lutheran teachings.

Luther takes refuge in the Wartburg castle, where he will live in seclusion.
