Luciano Berio, with Bruno Maderna, founds the Studio di Fonologia Musicale of the Italian Radio in Milan, an important electronic music center, in 1955.
A leading Italian modernist composer, Berio had studied with Giorgio Ghedini at the conservatory in Milan and with Luigi Dallapiccola at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood, Massachusetts.
Maderna, an eminent Italian composer and conductor whose principal teachers were Gian Francesco Malipiero (composition) and Hermann Scherchen (conducting), had written his earliest serial works in 1951.
