Lao King Mangrai in 1296 establishes the fortified capital city of Chiang Mai (meaning "new city"), situated on the Ping River about three hundred and sixty miles (five hundred and eighty kilometers) north of present Bangkok; it succeeds Chiang Rai as capital of the Lannathai kingdom.
