Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, founds a university in Helmstedt in 1576 that will become one of the chief seats of Protestant learning in the seventeenth century.

The University of Helmstedt, the first university of the duchy and the first Protestant university of the northern part of the Holy Roman Empire, is intended to train Protestant priests for the newly reformed state.
