Java's contact with the European colonial powers …

Years: 1528 - 1528

Java's contact with the European colonial powers had begun in 1522 with a treaty between the Sunda kingdom and the Portuguese in Malacca.

After its failure, the Portuguese presence was confined to Malacca, and to the eastern islands, notable Ternate and Tidore.

Indian Muslim traders, in cooperation with Arab and Persian sailors, have gained control of Javanese commerce by 1528.
