James I, the most renowned of the medieval kings of Aragon, has added the Balearic Islands and Valencia to his realm and thus initiated the Catalan-Aragonese expansion in the Mediterranean that is to reach its zenith in the last decades of the fourteenth century.

James’s role in the the period known as Reconquista is similar in Mediterranean Spain to that of his late contemporary Ferdinand III of Castile in Andalusia.

James liberates the city of Crevillent, in southeastern Spain, from the Moors in 1263.
