James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, had been an able ally of the late regent Moray during the the civil war between the supporters of Mary and of James.

Upon becoming regent in 1572, Morton completes the suppression of the rebels, restores the rule of law, and introduces a reformed episcopacy.

Nevertheless, the nobles resent the efficiency of his administration, and the Presbyterians reject the episcopacy.

He is also unsuccessful in seeking to persuade the English to enter a formal defensive league and financially support his government.
