Years: 1279 - 1279
Ivaylo is soon blockaded, however, for three months in Drăstăr (Silistra) by the Mongol allies of the emperor.
In the meantime, an imperial force besieges the Bulgarian capital.
The local nobility, after hearing a rumor of Ivaylo's death in battle, surrenders and accepts Ivan Asen III as emperor in 1279.
Michael Asen II, together with his mother Maria, is sent into captivity in the Empire.
Later in this year, Ivaylo suddenly appears before Tărnovo with an army, but he fails to take the well-fortified city.
