Thomas Eakins had begun to teach at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he becomes professor of drawing and painting in 1879.

A popular and influential teacher, Eakins stresses anatomy and drawing from live, nude models as opposed to the study of plaster casts of antique sculpture.

By this time, Eakins is in direct communication with photography pioneer Eadweard Muybridge.
