In 1992, an American U-2 spy plane, an aircraft that has been out of the public eye since the Cuban missle Crisis three decades earlier, is reported lost over Korea on a routine reconaaissance mission; Following UN-sponsored elections in 1993 (which the Khmer Rouge boycott), Prince Norodom Sihanouk returns to Cambodia as its constitutional monarch in a brokered power-sharing agreement.

The Khmer Rouge opposes the new government and continues their armed resistance.
