The Qing authorities unsuccessfully attempt to bring the southeast coastal region of Taiwan under their control in 1875, dispatching a column of three hundred soldiers against the Paiwan.
The Chinese troops are ambushed and routed by the aborigines.
Two hundred and fifty Chinese soldiers are killed, and the fifty survivors retreat to Takow (Kaohsiung).
