Having settled the west central part of the vast northern province of Nueva Vizcaya, Ibarra founds the capital city on July 8, 1563, located about two hundred and fifty miles (four hundred kilometers) north-northeast of Guadalajara, where in 1552 Captain Ginés Vázquez del Mercado had discovered one of the world’s richest iron-ore deposits (now an important part of Durango) which is named after him, present-day Cerro de Mercado.

Ibarra names his capital Durango for the Basque Country town of the same name.

Officially Victoria de Durango and also known as Ciudad de Durango, Durango is today is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Durango.
