Daniel, the fourth and youngest son of Prince Alexander Nevsky—famous in the history of the Russian State and the Russian Orthodox Church—and his second wife, Princess Vassa, was born in 1261 in Vladimir, the capital of the Great Vladimir-Suzdal principality.

One of the most junior princes in the House of Rurik, Daniel is thought to have been named after his celebrated relative, Daniel of Galicia.

His father died when he was only two years old.

Of his father's patrimonies, he had received the least valuable, that of Moscow.

When he was a child, the tiny principality was being governed by tiuns (deputies), appointed by his paternal uncle, Grand Prince Yaroslav III.

Daniel has been credited with founding the first Moscow monasteries, dedicated to the Lord's Epiphany and to Saint Daniel.

The Bohemian government before Wenceslaus came of age had been handled by Otto IV, Margrave of Brandenburg, who is said to have held Wenceslaus captive in several locations.

Wenceslaus returns to Bohemia in 1283, at the age of twelve.

His mother's second husband, Záviš of Falkenštejn, will rule instead of him for a few years.

Wenceslaus on January 24, 1285, marries Judith of Habsburg, daughter of Rudolf I, to whom he has been betrothed since 1276.

Jakub Świnka, whose parents are unknown, is probably a descendant of a peasant family from Greater Poland or Silesia that had started a career in Greater Poland, but with a limited success.

It is known that his elder brother Sulek did not hold any official posts while his uncle Jan Świnka will be mentioned in 1286 as the castellan of a tiny town of Spicymierz.

Jakub Świnka must have joined the Catholic Church and it is also probable that he graduated from a law school (probably in Cracow or Prague).

He had in the 1270s been promoted to the post of a cantor of the chapter in Gniezno.

The German archbishop of Gniezno Henry of Bremen had abdicated n early 1271 and soon afterwards Świnka had been chosen by the chapter as his successor.

However, due to strong opposition to his rule, it is not until twelve years afterwards when he is officially named the archbishop.

Świnka is consecrated in Kalisz on July 30, 1283 and the results of the voting are accepted by Pope Martin IV on December 19 of the same year.

The election of a Polish archbishop is seen by the rulers of Greater Poland as a chance to break the links with the Holy Roman Empire.
