Years: 1740 - 1740
Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari is the most celebrated pupil of Giovanni Paolo Colonna, maestro di cappella of S. Petronio, at Bologna.
Clari had become maestro di cappella at Pistoia about 1712, and takes the same position at Bologna in 1720.
He is mainly known for his vocal duets and trios with basso continuo, first published in Italy in 1740.
Admired by Luigi Cherubini, G. F. Handel, and Charles Avison, they combine graceful melody with contrapuntal learning and during the eighteenth century are to gain great popularity in England.
Handel will make considerable use of them for thematic material.
