The rebellion persists despite the Turkish reaction, and thus Sultan Mahmud II is forced to seek the aid of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, trying to lure him with the pashalik of Crete.
On May 28, 1822, an Egyptian fleet of thirty warships and eighty-four transports arrived at Souda Bay led by Hasan Pasha, Mehmet Ali's son-in-law; he is tasked with ending the rebellion and does not waste any time in the burning of villages throughout Crete.
