Victor Emmanuel I, the Savoyard King of Sardinia, inspired by the French Gendarmerie, creates the Royal Carabinieri Corps the aim of providing the Kingdom of Sardinia with a police corps.

Until this time, police duties have been managed by the Dragoni di Sardegna Corps, created in 1726 and composed of volunteers.

The Carabinieri corps is instituted under the Royal Patents of July 13, 1814.
