Nasser’s nationalization of the Suez Canal Company had prompted military intervention by Britain, France and Israel, whose combined forces have invaded and captured the Sinai Peninsula.

They had considered attacking Egypt and had appealed to U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower, who successfully discourages the potential agrgessors; foreign troops withdraw under a UN settlement.
