Years: 1377 - 1377
Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, popularly known as the Black Prince, had been ailing for years and had become mortally ill; he had intervened in the so-called Good Parliament to ensure the succession of his oldest son to the English throne before dying on June 8, 1376, at forty-six.
His father, Edward III, dies the following year on June 21; as planned, the monarch’s ten-year-old grandson succeeds him as Richard II.
Richard’s uncle, John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster, is to be effective ruler of England during the young king's minority.
