Thomas Eakins, director of the Schools of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts since 1882, has continued to insist on the importance of teaching from nude human models.

After allowing a mixed class to draw from a completely nude male model, he is finally forced in 1866 to resign his chair at the straitlaced Academy.

This is another severe blow, as teaching has become a major part of his life.

He continues to teach sporadically at the newly formed Art Students League in Philadelphia and at the National Academy of Design in New York, and his personal relationships with young artists remain close.
