Ming border general Wu Sangui, having learned of the fate of the capital and an army of Li Zicheng marching towards him; weighs his options and decides to side with the Manchus.
In short order, the Manchus, seizing opportunity, cross the Great Wall after Wu opens the gates at Shanhai Pass.
Led by Dorgon and Wu, the Manchu army approaches Beijing after destroying the army sent against them by Li at Shanhaiguan; the Prince of Shun's army flees the capital on the fourth of June.
The Manchus and Wu enter the capital on June 6th and proclaim the young Shunzhi Emperor ruler of China.
