Despite expectations of the Popular Front, Moldova …

Years: 1992 - 1992

Despite expectations of the Popular Front, Moldova did not unite with Romania in 1991; nevertheless, a brief military conflict ensues between Moldova and Transnistria.

The latter, aided by contingents of Russian, Cossack and Ukrainian volunteers, and the 14th Russian (formerly Soviet) Army, successfully defeats the Moldovan forces in the War of Transnistria.

A ceasefire is declared in 1992, and the Council of Europe recognizes Transnistria as a "frozen conflict" region.

Transnistria, whose sovereignty is an issue of contention, continues to claim independence and maintains sovereignty over its territory with the assistance of Russian forces and Ukrainian forces; negotiations between the Transnistrian and Moldovan leaders continue under the mediation of the European Union, OSCE, USA, Russia and Ukraine.
