Years: 1540 - 1683

Humayun (r. 1530-56), the son of Babur, also a soldier, inherited a difficult task his father died.

He was pressed from all sides by a reassertion of Afghan claims to the Delhi throne, by disputes over his own succession, and by the Afghan-Rajput march into Delhi in 1540.

He flees to Persia, where he spends nearly ten years as an embarrassed guest at the Safavid court.

In 1545 he gains a foothold in Kabul, reasserts his Indian claim, defeats Sher Khan Sur, the most powerful Afghan ruler, and takes control of Delhi in 1555.
