The Anasazi display apparent astronomical orientations in Casa Rinconada at Chaco Canyon, in New Mexico, where they live until about 1200.

The Ancient Pueblo People or Ancestral Puebloans (the preferred terms for the cultural group of people often known as Anasazi) had developed an advanced culture in the mesa country of northwestern New Mexico around 1000.

The so-called cliff dwellers—a merger of the Basket Maker culture with the Anasazi people—develop magnificent stone cities that cling precipitously to the cliff walls of the deep canyons, probably in response to threats from nomadic tribes of the region from about 1200.
