Both North and South scramble to create armies after the fall of Fort Sumter in April 1861.

Lincoln declares a state of “insurrection” on April 15 and calls for seventy-five thousand volunteers to serve for three months to confront in the South, "combinations too powerful to be suppressed in the ordinary way".

This immediately causes the secession of four additional states, including Virginia.
