Augustine completes “The City of God …
Years: 426 - 426
Augustine completes “The City of God” in 426, dismissing the anti-Christian pagan position and instead interpreting history in terms of Christian revelation.
A centerpiece of the author’s argument is that of the "two cities:" the Christian city, devoted to God; and the earthly pagan city (Babylon) devoted to the devil; Babylon, open to moral confusion and strife, is scheduled ultimately for destruction.
Augustine begins developing a theology of church and sacrament to refute the doctrines of the Donatists.
