  • However, poor winds and the risk of becoming trapped in the Bay of Biscay led Drake to divert to Corunna (Galicia) instead.
  • Norreys took the lower town, killing 500 Spaniards and plundering the wine cellars.
  • Drake destroyed 13 Spanish merchant ships in the harbor.
  • The English then laid siege to Corunna’s fortified upper town, but:
    • Spanish galleys slipped past the English fleet, repeatedly resupplying the defenders.
    • The English struggled against fortified positions and bad weather.
    • After two weeks of stalemate, they abandoned the siege, having lost:
      • Four captains.
      • Several hundred soldiers in combat.
      • 3,000 personnel from disease or desertion, including many Dutch mercenaries who returned to England or went to La Rochelle.
