The statue of Zeus at Olympia, sculpted …

Years: 432BCE - 432BCE
The statue of Zeus at Olympia, sculpted by Phidias in a special workshop behind the temple between about 436 BCE and 432 BCE, stands approximately forty feet (twelve meters) high; the seated figure, holding a scepter with an eagle in its left hand and a Nike in its right, rests on an elaborate throne covered with ebony, glass, and gemstone inlays as well as sculptures and paintings of Greek myths and legends.

The figure’s flesh is ivory and the drapery gold.

In front of the figure is a blue-black stone basin filled with oil to protect it from Olympia’s humid climate.
