Athanasius of Alexandria, a recognized Christian theologian and ascetic who had received his philosophical and theological training at Alexandria, had in 325 attended Bishop Alexander of Alexandria as deacon at the Council of Nicaea.
When the latter dies in 328, the orthodox Athanasius is the obvious candidate to succeed him.
