Years: 1780 - 1791

Peter Jacob Hjelm, at the suggestion of fellow Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, heats a paste prepared from an oxide of molybdenum and linseed oil at high temperatures in a crucible, and successfully isolates the metal in 1781-82.

He names it molybdenum, from the Greek molybdos, lead.
