Buyeo Abang, the eldest son of Baekje's fifteenth ruler Chimnyu, had ascended to the throne after the death of Chimnyu’s brother, the sixteenth king Jinsa, whom he is said to have killed.

The Goguryeo offensive infuriates Asin, who subsequently plans a counteroffensive against Gwanggaeto, a plan he is forced to abandon when his invasion force is defeated by Goguryeo 393.

Zhai Zhao tries to start a coup against Murong Yong in 393 and is killed.

Yao Chang falls seriously ill around the new year of 393, and on his death bed tells Yao Xing to trust the several officials with whom he has entrusted his administration: Yin, Yao Huang, Yao Damu, and Di Bozhi.

When Yao Huang asks Yao Chang for strategies to defeat the Former Qin emperor Fu Deng, Yao Chang refuses to answer, merely stating that he trusts that Yao Xing will be able to accomplish it.

When Fu Deng, having heard of Yao Chang’s illness, attacks the Later Qin vassal Dou Chong at Anding (in modern Pingliang, Gansu), Yao Chang, at the suggestion of the prime minister Yin Wei, sends Yao Xing against Fu Deng in order to establish Yao Xing's authority over the troops.

Yao Xing is able to stop Fu Deng's attack on Dou with relative ease.

Eunomius, born at Dacora in Cappadocia early in the fourth century, had studied theology at Alexandria under Aetius, and afterwards had come under the influence of Eudoxius of Antioch, who had ordained him deacon, and on whose recommendation he had been appointed bishop of Cyzicus in 360, where his free utterance of extreme Arian views had led to popular complaints.

By command of the emperor, Constantius II, Eudoxius was compelled to depose Eunomius from the bishopric within a year of his elevation to it.

During the reigns of Julian and Jovian, Eunomius had resided in Constantinople in close intercourse with Aetius, developing what will come to be known as the anomoean party and helping to consecrate schismatical bishops.

The teaching of the Anomoean school, led by Aetius and Eunomius, starting from the conception of God as Creator, argued that between the Creator and created there could be no essential, but at best only a moral, resemblance.

would involve a contradiction of His essence by introducing duality into the Godhead."

He had then gone to live at Chalcedon, from whence in 367 he was banished to Mauretania for harboring the rebel Procopius.

He was recalled, however, before he reached his destination.

According to Socrates of Constantinople (v. 24), Eunomius carried his views to a practical issue by altering the baptismal formula.

Instead of baptizing in the name of the Trinity, he baptized in the name of the Creator and into the death of Christ.

This alteration was regarded by the orthodox as so serious that Eunomians on returning to the church were rebaptized, though the Arians were not.

The Eunomian heresy was formally condemned by the Council of Constantinople in 381.

In 383 the emperor Theodosius, who had demanded a declaration of faith from all party leaders, punished Eunomius for continuing to teach his distinctive doctrines, by banishing him to Halmyris in Scythia Minor.

He afterwards resided at Chalcedon and at Caesarea in Cappadocia, from which he had been expelled by the inhabitants for writing against their bishop Basil.

His last days are spent at his birthplace Dacora, where he dies about 393, after which Eutropius orders that Eunomius' body be moved to Tyana and his books be burned.

The sect will maintain a separate existence for some time, but will gradually fall away owing to internal divisions.

There had been a good measure of debate in the Early Church over the New Testament canon, but the major writings had been accepted by almost all Christians by the middle of the second century.

Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, in his Easter letter of 367, had given a list of exactly the same books as what would become the New Testament canon, and he had used the word "canonized" (kanonizomena) in regards to them.

Pope Damasus's Council of Rome in 382, if the Decretum Gelasianum is correctly associated with it, had issued a biblical canon identical to that mentioned above, or if not the list is at least a sixth century compilation.

Likewise, Damasus's commissioning of the Latin Vulgate edition of the Bible, c. 383, was instrumental in the fixation of the canon in the West.

The African Synod of Hippo in 393 approves the New Testament as it stands today, together with the Septuagint books, a decision that will be repeated by Councils of Carthage in 397 and 419.

These councils are under the authority of Augustine, who regards the canon as already closed.

Eugenius, when elected emperor in the West, had sent ambassadors to Theodosius's court, asking for recognition of his election.

Theodosius had received them, but started to gather troops to defeat Eugenius.

Theodosius leaves no further doubts as to his position when in January 393 he elevates his nine-year-old son Honorius to Augustus of the West and thereby demonstrates that he will no longer tolerate any emperor other than himself and his sons.

The now inevitable struggle for power is thus at the same time a struggle that will decide whether other religions will again be tolerated within the empire alongside Christianity.

Because Theodosius still refrains from military action, his enemies occupy Italy in the spring of 393.

Led by Roman prefect Nicomachus Flavianus, the forces striving to preserve the old cults gather around Eugenius.

Eugenius is also successful in the military field, notably in the renovation of old alliances with Alamanni and Franks.

Arbogast, who is a Frank and has also Alemanni and Frank soldiers in his ranks, marches to the Rhine frontier, where he impresses and pacifies the Germanic tribes by parading his army in front of them.

He imposes a treaty on the Frankish leaders Marcomer and Sunno.

King Asin again attacks Goguryeo in 394, and is again defeated.

Yao Chang soon dies, and Yao Xing succeeds him, although not initially, as he keeps his father's death a secret and entrusts the troops to his uncles Yao Xu and Yao Shuode and his brother Yao Chóng, while preparing a campaign against Former Qin.

Yao Xing had hoped to keep his father's death a secret, but Fu Deng receives news of it anyway and immediately prepares a major attack against Later Qin.
