Arnold of Brescia, having spent his post-Paris …

Years: 1146 - 1146

Arnold of Brescia, having spent his post-Paris years traveling in Switzerland and Bohemia, achieves a reconciliation with Eugenius and returns to Italy.

He shortly becomes the intellectual leader of a radical new Rome-based political group that calls for liberties and democratic rights.

Arnold teaches that clergy while owning property have no power to perform the Sacraments.

The group establishes a republic in 1146 and forces Eugenius into exile.

Bernard of Clairvaux denounces Arnold’s political schemes, but, even after his excommunication, Arnold continues to head the city-state.
