An agreement between Scottish King James III …

Years: 1480 - 1491

An agreement between Scottish King James III and the Macdonald “Lord of the Isles” in 1480 turns Macdonald’s illegitimate son, Aonghas Óg, against both his father and the central government, cleaving the western Highlands into two feuding groups.

Aonghas, joined by the MacKenzie and Macleod clans, wages the exceptionally violent Battle of Bloody Bay, capturing his own father and two Maclean lieutenants.

Aonghas will continue to promote strife and division in the Highlands until his assassination in 1490.
