American baseball player Abert Fred “Red” Schoendienst, born in Illinois in 1923, enjoys a 19-year career as a second baseman with the Cardinals (1965-76), Giants and Braves.
He leads the National League in fielding percentage six times and also hits .300 or better on five occasions.
As a manager, he twice pilots the Cardinals to the World Series.
A regular at Cardinals games, he has worn a major league uniform every big league season since 1945.
The Committee on Baseball Veterans elects him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
