Demetrius defeats Ptolemy's fleet near Salamis on Cyprus in 306, and conquers the island.

Demetrius' victory over Ptolemy gives Antigonus control of the Aegean, of the eastern Mediterranean, and of all of the Near East except Babylonia.

The assembled army proclaims Antigonus king (basileus), and his friends adorn him with the diadem.

For his part, Antigonus appoints Demetrius king and co-regent and sends him the diadem.

This is to become a traditional ceremony in the Hellenistic monarchy.

An exceptional strategist and combat leader, Antigonus is also an astute ruler who cultivates the friendship of Athens and other Greek city-states.

He establishes as his capital city Antigoneia, a little father up on the Orontes than present-day Antakya (Antioch).

The Athenian-born parents of the philosopher Epicurus, Neocles and Chaerestrate, his father a citizen, had emigrated to the Athenian settlement on the Aegean island of Samos about ten years before Epicurus's birth in February 341 BCE.

As a boy, he had studied philosophy for four years under the Platonist teacher Pamphilus.

He had gone to Athens at the age of eighteen for his two-year term of military service.

The playwright Menander had served in the same age-class of the ephebes as Epicurus.

After the death of Alexander the Great, Perdiccas had expelled the Athenian settlers on Samos to Colophon, on the coast of what is now Turkey.

Epicurus had joined his family there after the completion of his military service.

He had studied under Nausiphanes, who follows the teachings of Democritus.

Epicurus taught in Mytilene in 311/310 but caused strife and was forced to leave.

He then founded a school in Lampsacus in 308 before returning in 306 to Athens, where he founds The Garden, a school named for the garden he owns about halfway between the Stoa and the Academy that serves as the school's meeting place.

His followers will come to be known as philosophers of the garden.

The school accepts women and enslaved people.

Lysimachus, who has joined Cassander in the alliance against Antigonus, and Seleucus, holding on to a damaged Babylon and the eastern provinces, follow suit.

The immediate assumption of royal titles by their opponents ends the nominal unity of Alexander's empire, the partition of which, into five states, is now formally established.

Ptolemy, following Antigonus's vain attack of Egypt in 306-05, also assumes the title of king, as does Cassander in Macedonia.

Antigonus had sent Demetrius in 305 BCE to conquer Rhodes, which had refused him armed support against Ptolemy.

Arriving with two hundred warships, one hundred and seventy transports, forty thousand troops and thirty thousand workers, Demetrius besieges Rhodes, attempting several tactics.

Tribes in the central Apennines, with Samnite encouragement, had withdrawn from their alliances with Rome, but Roman forces have subdued these tribes within a couple of years.

The Samnites lose the Battle of Bovianum in 305 and are forced, with their remaining allies, to conclude a peace with Rome in the following year.
