John Cantacuzenus, the protector of Gregory Palamas …

Years: 1347 - 1347
February

John Cantacuzenus, the protector of Gregory Palamas and Isidore Buchiras, enters Constantinople after the vicious civil war and forces his opponents to crown him co-emperor.

A fourth synod held in February 1347 eposes the patriarch, John XIV, and excommunicates Akindynos.

Buchiras, who had been excommunicated by the third synod, is now made patriarch.

In the same month, the Barlaamite party holds a competing synod that refuses to acknowledge Isidore and excommunicates Palamas.
