A diamond weighing 969.8 carats, later to be called the Excelsior, is found in 1893 at the Jagersfontein Mine in South Africa, one hundred and thirty kilometers (eighty-one miles) south east of Kimberley, whose fame as a diamond mining center will always overshadow that of Jagersfontein.
It has a blue-white tint and weighs 971 old carats or 995.2 metric carats (or 194 grams).
The Excelsior rates as the third largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found.
It will ultimately be cut into ten stones weighing from thirteen to sixty-eight carats. (two point six to thirteeen point six grams).
